How is the theme of redemption explored in A Christmas Carol Essays

How is the theme of redemption explored in A Christmas Carol Essays How is the theme of redemption explored in A Christmas Carol Paper How is the theme of redemption explored in A Christmas Carol Paper Essay Topic: A Christmas Carol A Christmas Carol was written by Charles Dickens in the mid nineteenth century depicting the social and economic life of the working people in London. The appalling conditions under which the people had to work is in sharp contrast with the ways the rich people lived in luxury. Most of the people, especially the poor, lived in a rejected environment and had to work long hours with little wages, thus enduring hardship. Children, as young as six, are made to work in order to support their families expenses. Although the rich people had a lot of money, they did not help the poor. They thought that people became poor because they were lazy and did not do enough work. Dickens chose to call his story a song because of the Christmas hymn, Tis season to be jolly. He wants us to remember the poor by giving and sharing in the special time of Christmas. He wants to express the spirit of Christmas from a Christians point of view. This includes hymns and charities as well as remembering the joyful time about the birth of Jesus Christ. Also, he wants us to know the meaning of true Christmas. Finally, Dickens chose the Christmas setting for his novel to help us explore the character of Scrooge. The novel consists of staves instead of chapters (a stave is a musical score). The different staves are like parts of the tune, which makes up the whole song, and the book is the song. This might be another reason why he chose this title. STAVE ONE, MARLEYS GHOST The main character in this book is called Ebenezer Scrooge. In the beginning of the book, this character arouses a curious ambiguity in the readers response towards him. In stave one itself, the writer promptly describes him as a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. His attitude is so bad that Even the blindmens dogs appeared to know him; and when they saw him coming on, will tug their owners into doorways and up courts; and then will wag their tails as though they said, No eye at all is better than an evil eye, dark master! This cold-blooded, miserly, rude, greedy and extremely selfish old man works in a counting house in London. Although he is rich, he is very tight with his money. He pays his employee, Bob Crachit, little wages and leaves the latter shivering in his office because he refuses to spend money on coal for a fire on anyone except himself. Moreover, he hates Christmas. Because of this, he is reluctant to give Mr Crachit a day off for Christmas. It shows how callous he is in ignoring basic rights for workers. He is also rude to his nephew, who comes to invite him to a Christmas dinner party. Scrooge refuses the invitation and calls Christmas a humbug. He then forces his nephew out of his office. His attitude towards the poor is also repulsive. He has no consideration for them. He treats them as a dozen of lazy people and wonders why he should provide for them. Scrooge looks down upon the charity collectors because he simply states that the poor should die because they are simply useless to the world. He argues that prisons are the only charities he cares to. Through Scrooges implicit defense of the poor laws, Dickens dismisses the excuses of the indifferent upper class as irresponsible, selfish and cruel. Dickens has used both simple and sophisticated language to present and develop Scrooges character. He uses anti-Christian terms whenever he has Scrooge speaking. For instance, he spits out an angry word Bah Humbug, in response to his nephews sincere merry Christmas. Also, when he enters his apartment after seeing Marleys ghost on the door knocker, he says, a disgusted Pooh-pooh! Even before the arrival of Marleys ghost, the atmosphere is fairly tense. Dickens describes Scrooge as a thoroughly unhappy person. Scrooge took his melancholy dinner in his usual melancholy tavern. This means that Scrooge is already in a low spirit. Scrooge then passes the yard, which the writer describes as, so dark, that even Scrooge who knew its every stone was afraid to grope with his hands, he then approaches the door of his apartment; there he suddenly comes face to face with Marley. At first, he could not believe his eyes and thinks it is some kind of hallucination. Can it really be Marley? But he is not dead as a door nail. When he enters his house, he checks the back of the door knocker, but could not find anything, apart from the bolts that held the door knocker in place. He shakes his head and runs up the stairs. He double locks his door to his room and is about to take the gruel for his cold. When, at that moment, he senses a chill blowing through the rooms and the papers start to fly around. His apartment is described as a gloomy suite of rooms which are old and dreary. The wind gets stronger, the clock strikes and the disused bell rings. The door to his room flings open, Marleys ghost, dressed in chains, appears and stood in front of him. Instantly, Scrooge receives a terrific shock and he screams. He kneels down before Marley and wants to know what the deceased has come here for. The arrival of Marleys ghost may scare young readers, but it definitely makes us realise that material wealth is not everything on earth, because it helps to increase our burden in the life thereafter, ( the life to come after resurrection ). This gives Scrooge a sense of realisation about his bad nature and persuades him to make a change before it is too late. Although Scrooge is dumbfounded with fear, this visit makes him think back of all the bad things he has done to the community.

The Values of Online Advertisement on Social Media Sites Essay

The Values of Online Advertisement on Social Media Sites - Essay Example This paper illustrates that various studies have been carried out on Facebook and how it has now been used in online advertisements and for commercial purposes. In a study by Clemons, Barnett, and Appadurai, the authors set out to establish the value of social media networks such as Facebook to the future of advertising. The authors were able to establish that the social media are a tool which has allowed the consumers to determine what they want to be made aware of the products themselves without being influenced by profiteering companies. The authors, therefore, were able to point out that consumers are now using the Internet and the social media in order to carry out what they want at the time of their choosing. These consumers are also able to escape TV ads through TiVO and seemingly, the social media network is the last resort for advertisers. With the growth of the Internet and the social media, consumers have now become more discerning and not totally trusting what is advertis ed on TV or in newspapers or magazines. These consumers have now become more empowered in their consumption as they are able to use the social media to review products and determine how well a produce would work for them. This study is, however, based on secondary information gathered from a database and from the research of other authors on the subject matter. Nevertheless, the data established by the authors are reliable as they confirm trends already established in previous studies. The authors were also able to provide a clear and valid assessment of the data, linking these to current trends in advertisement and social media applications. Gaps in the data are apparent in relation to the primary database needed to support reliable and evidence-based research. Nevertheless, the value of the social media in advertising has been apparent in this study and in other related studies. In the study by Tucker, the author sought to evaluate how Internet users’ conceptualization of c ontrol over their personal data impacts the likelihood of their clicking on online advertising. The authors used data they gathered from a randomised field experiment where they sought to examine the general efficacy of personalizing ads on social networking sites including Facebook. The authors revealed that the website gave the users the chance to have greater control over their personally identifiable data. The website also did not change how the advertisers utilised data to target and modify the ads. When privacy measures were introduced, the users were even more likely to click on personalized ads. The study suggested that it may be important to give the users control over their private data in order to assist advertising-supported media and advertisers on said sites. This also means that privacy controls can have harmful advertising outcomes. For advertisers, such controls are not enticing prospects, but for consumers, are welcome prospects. As a randomized controlled field st udy, this study provided strong primary evidence for this research. The methodology was well explained and replicable, with the design appropriate for the variables being studied.

Statement of Individual Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Statement of Individual Rights - Essay Example According to Hatts (2005), the infusion is causing anxiety to the council of elders at the island. The growth is altering the social, economic and the political structure of the island. This implies that the elders who have had the autonomous rule in the island will have to adjust their style of leadership when devising laws for use in the island. They will no longer determine the values of the people in the island. However, they will influence the formulation of the statement of individual rights. Analysis of the legal and political philosophical principles at the Nation of Tagg The elders will find it difficult to continue with their administration using their â€Å"top down† approach because of growth in the population. They will have to acknowledge the changes that come with diversity. As such, the council of elders will no longer dictate to the people â€Å"the statement of their rights†. Instead, individual rights will be made through consensus as opposed to †Å"the top down approach†. The elders will loose the autonomy they had of formulating policies for governing the island. The island will be governed differently since the populace will be made of people from diverse backgrounds. A democratic approach will be preferred as the form of administration as asserted by Shweder (2002). Issues such as the right to property will be guaranteed to the citizens of the island. The discovery of oil in the island will diversify the economic activities of the people. According to Hatts (2005), oil exploration will affect the economies of the region. For instance, the legal philosophies will be aligned with the needs of the majority of the populations. Religion will be considered in devising laws for governing oil exploration. Legal institutions will come up with laws on taxation for people engaging in trade. Hence, democracy will be fundamental to enhancing mutual understanding in the island. It will be required upon every individual to respect the rights of one another. Everyone will be obligated to pay tax to the authorities. The diversity in cultures insinuates that there will be a difference in people values. Moreover, the administrative approach used in the island will no longer be effective. Therefore, it will be necessary to restructure the laws for delivering justice. This will ensure fairness and harmony exist among the populace in the island of Tagg. All laws should be objective and consistent logically (Peczenik, 2009). The council of elders will face resistance from different quarters of the population unless they embrace democracy. Therefore, it will not be easy for them to enforce laws to people of different philosophic ideologies. The statement of the individual rights will be made through consultations in the island to avoid conflicts in the island. After which, people living in the island will be respected. Meaning the authorities will recognize the difference in people’s culture and consider diver sity when implementing laws. The top down approach will no longer be used in governorship. Instead, the council of elders will embrace a participative approach in formulating laws in the island (Hatts, 2005). They will have to collaborate with all the individuals in the island in coming up with laws. The laws to be devised should ensure there is equity in distribution of oil resources. Moreover, religion and culture will be considered when coming up with l

History of the olympic games Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

History of the olympic games - Term Paper Example These activities later improved. Since at that time, man had little knowledge of other activities the survival skills therefore created entertainment activities. They would wrestle to determine who is strongest in the community and they would be chosen as leaders because of their strength. Division of the small societies due to disagreement created the need for improvement of these skills. To prevent fights between these communities Heracles created peaceful sports. Olympic Games founder was the son of Zeus. Dedication of these games was to the Olympian gods and staged at the ancient plains of Olympia. Herakles initiated the Olympic Games so as to reunite warring nations. Individuals who would be caught with weapons at Olympia would fall under Zeus’s wrath. Soldiers and may others joined this noble cause. Sport then became competitive with awards given to winners with acknowledgment of their families. This created interest and desire as many athletes used this to uplift their families’ names. The games were every four years, in a span called the Olympiad. There were no rules in this games and most focused on proving masculinity. Athletes competed as individuals. Cheating was not part of the game, and those caught cheating fined heavily, and the money used to build the Zanes; statues of Zeus. Games in this period concentrated only on single races. A naked runner Coroebus who was a runner from Elis won the Stade; a run of approximately 192 meters which by then was the only event in the Olympics. After the stade run, different sports came into existence including the Hoplitodrome. This was a footrace while the athletes wore their full armor. Another sport was the pentathlon which like the name suggests the athletes competed in different sports during the same event, these included wrestling, jumping, discus, sprinting and, javelin. A

The Doppler Effect And Its Applications

The Doppler Effect And Its Applications Perhaps you have noticed how the sound of a vehicles horn changes as the vehicle moves past you. The frequency of the sound you hear as the vehicle approaches you is higher than the frequency you hear as it moves away from us. This is one example of the Doppler Effect. To see what causes this apparent frequency change, imagine you are in a boat that is lying at anchor on a gentle sea where the waves have a period of T =30s. This means that every 3.0 s a crest hits your boat. These effects occur because the relative speed between your boat and the waves depends on the direction of travel and on the speed of your boat. When you are moving toward the right in Figure 17.9b, this relative speed is higher than that of the wave speed, which leads to the observation of an increased frequency. When you turn around and move to the left, the relative speed is lower, as is the observed frequency of the water waves. Content Doppler Effect (Sound) and its Application Introduction In physics, the Doppler Effect can be defined as, The increase or decrease in the frequency of sound and also to other waves such as the source and observer moving toward or away from each other. Thus the effect causes the change in pitch which is clearly noticed in a passing siren or train horn, as well as in the red shift/blue shift. The Doppler Effect is familiar to us with everyday experiences. It explains us the change in the pitch of a fast moving car horn or any other fast moving sound source as it passes us. If the car is approaching us, the pitch of the cars horn will be greater than if the car were stationary and as the car passes us and begins to move away from us the pitch will be lower than if the car were stationary. In fact, whenever the source and observer of a sound are in relative motion, the observed frequency will be different than that of the emitted one by the source. For example: The Observer feel higher frequency, when the train is coming to the observer. The Observer feel lower frequency, when the train is going far from the observer. History: The Doppler Effect was discovered by a scientist named Christian Doppler, who gifted his idea to us in year1842. He thought, if sound wave coming from the source might have a greater frequency and if the source is moving toward or the observer so there will be lower frequency if the source is moving away from the observer. Though some doubted the existence of this phenomenon, it was experimentally verified in 1845 by C. H. D. Buys Ballot (1817-1890) of Holland. Buys Ballot examined the alteration in pitch as he was passed by a locomotive carrying several trumpeters, all playing a constant note. The Doppler effect is considered most often in relation to sound (acoustic waves) and light (electromagnetic waves) but holds for any wave. When the source and observer of light waves move apart, the observed light will be shifted to lower frequencies, towards the red end of the spectrum, while if the source and observer move toward each other the light will be shifted to higher frequencies, t owards the blue end of the spectrum. The Doppler Effect is the phenomenon to observe at a particular time when the wave is emitted by a source moving w.r.t. the observer .The Doppler Effect can be stated as the effect produced by a moving source of wave when there is an apparent upward shift in the frequency to be observed by the observer and the source which is approaching toward it and the downward shift in the frequency to which it when the observer and the source is contacting. Change in the wavelength due to the motion of the source For the waves which propagate in the medium, such as sound waves, the speed of the observer and the source are in relation with the medium to which the waves are transmitted. The Doppler Effect may result from the change in position of the source, relative motion to the observer. Each of the effect is analyzed singly. For the waves which do not require any medium for propagation, eg. Light and gravity in general relativity, for it the difference in velocity of the observer and that of the source needs to be considered. HOW DOPPLER EFFECT DOES OCCURS: TYPES OF DOPPLER EFFECT: Symmetrical: It implies that Doppler shift is same when the source of light moves towards/away from a stationary observer or the observer moves with the same velocity towards/away from the stationary source. Asymmetrical: It implies that apparent change in the frequency is different when the source of sound moves towards/away from a stationary observer or as that occurs, when the observer moves with the same velocity towards/away from the stationary source. DOPPLER FORMULAE: Now the observer is in motion and also the source is stationary, then the measured frequency is: (1) When the up sign correspond to the arriving observer and the lower sign correspond to a receding observer. Now the source is in motion and the observer is stationary, then the measured frequency is: , (2) Where the up sign correspond to the source arriving and the lower sign correspons to the source receding from the observer. When both the source and observer are in motion, then the measured frequency is: 3) Note that the sign in the numerator and denominator are not depending on each other. By using the general facts for the sign at the numerator, the up sign is to be used if the observer is moving toward the source and the down sign if moving away from the source; in the denominator, the upper sign is used if the source is in motion w.r.t the source towards the observer and the lower sign if moving away. A simple trick to remember the signs is to remind one when or not the observed frequency is becoming to increase or decrease and to use whenever sign is required. For eg, when an observer is moving away from a source, the wave are going to move across it at the slow rate rather than if it was still, which signifies that the observers frequency is decreasing. And also it can be for when the source is in motion w.r.t an observer, it will go to smoosh the wave together as it emit it, which means to say that the increase in the observed frequency. This will be covered by making the denominator in eq (3) smaller, which do requires using it again. Source moving with V source < V sound: In picture shows sound source has radiated sound wave at the const. frequency in the same medium. However, the sound source is turning to the right with a speed Vs = 0.7 V(In mach). The wave fronts are to be produced with the same frequency. Since the source is moving and the center of the new wave front is now slightly shifted to the right. As a result, the wave fronts start bunching on the right side (in front of) and spread further on the left side of source. An observer in the front of the sourceis made to hear it at higher frequency f ÂÂ ´ > f0, and then the observer back to the source will hear a lower frequency f ÂÂ ´ < f0. Source moving with V source = V sound: Here the source is moving with the speed of sound in the medium (Vs = V, Mach 1). The wave fronts in front of the source are all bunched up to the same point. An observer in front of the source will feel nothing until the source arrives to him. The front will be quite intense, due to all the wave fronts add together. The figure at right shows a bullet travelling at Mach 1.01. You can see the shock wave front just ahead of the bullet. Source moving with V source > V sound: The sound source has been broken through the sound speed barrier, and is traveling at the greater speed then the speed of sound. Here the source is moving faster than that of the sound waves it creates are really leading the advancing wave fronts. It is this intense pressure front on the Mach cone that causes the shock wave known as a sonic boom as a supersonic aircraft passes overhead. The shock wave advances at the speed of sound v, since it has been built up from all of the combined wave fronts, the sound heard to the observer will be of the quite intense. Application of Doppler Effect: Sirens: The reason why the siren slides or blow, is because it doesnt hit you. It can be says as, if the siren is approaching to the observer directly, the pitch of the sound would remain constant (we have, vs, r is the radial component) till the source hit the observer, and then jump to the lower pitch. Because of the vehicle passes from the observer, the radial velocity never remains constant, but instead to vary as a function of the angle between observer line of sight and the sirens velocity: Vr = Vscos ÃŽÂ ¸ Where vs is the velocity of the source w.r.t. the medium, and the angle ÃŽÂ ¸ is the angle between the objects forward velocity and the line of sight from the object to the observer. Radar:-In the radars Doppler Effect is widely used in some of the radar, to measure the velocity of the object. A sound with required wavelength, intensity is fired to a moving target as it approaches from the radar source. Each subsequent radar wave has to travel farther to reach the object, before being redetected near the source. As each wave has to move farther, the gap between each wave increases, increasing the wavelength. Calculations from the Doppler Effect accurately determine the observers velocity. Weather Analysis or prediction: -Doppler radar uses the Doppler Effect for electromagnetic waves to predict the weather. In Astronomy:-The Doppler shift for light is used to help astronomers discover new planets and binary stars. Echocardiography: A medical test uses ultrasound and Doppler techniques to visualize the structure of the heart. Radio Direction Finding Systems

Teaching Computer Ethics in the Classroom :: essays research papers

Teaching Computer Ethics in the Classroom The computer is considered one of the most technological advances of the twentieth century. As the general public becomes increasingly ‘computer literate,' the gap between technology and peoples' intellect notably shrinks. The readily available computers, software, and assorted output devices have enlightened many but, in turn, have increased the using of computers for unethical activities, privacy invasion and illegal purposes. Legal sanctions against abusive use of computers are a reactive approach. A proactive approach is to teach students about computer ethics in classrooms. An effective teaching method are the presentation of ethical scenarios. It is anticipated that through this method, students will personalize the need for developing ethical standards of behavior. The ultimate goal is for students, if necessary, to change their set of personal beliefs to include ethics. INTRODUCTION The computer is considered one of the most important technological advances of the twentieth century. Security and privacy issues have been in existence long before the computer became a vital component of organizations' operations. Nevertheless, the operating features of a computer make it a double-edged sword. Computer technologies with reliable error detection and recording capabilities, permit the invasion of a supposedly secure environment to occur on a grand scale and go undetected. Furthermore, computer and communications technology permit the invasion of a persons' privacy and likewise go undetected. Two forces threaten privacy: one, the growth of information technology with its enhanced capacity for surveillance, communication, computation, storage and retrieval and two, the more insidious threat, the increased value of information in decision making. Information has become more vital in the competitive environment, thus, decision makers covet it even if it viol! ates another's privacy. Violation of ones personal privacy, via computers, may in part be due to the incomplete understanding of responsibility on the part of those involved. Is it a management or a technical concern? Ethical standards that evolved over the history of Western civilization deal with interpersonal relationships. What is right or wrong? What one should do and not do when dealing with other people. Ethical behavior in a business environment has not been as clearly defined. When businesses were small and the property of a few individuals, traditional ethical standards were applied to meet different situations. However, as businesses became larger, the interpersonal ethical relations did not provide any clear behavioral guidelines. Likewise, the principles of ethical relationships were even less pertinent to the corporate environments. Elements of gambling Essay

There are two elements of Gambling, including game of chance and gambling mentality. Chance means people cannot control the outcome of an event but with possibility of winning. Player wagers money on irreversible bet in which the outcome relies on chance. Gambling mentality means the willing to take risk. To gamble on something is to take a risk on something in which the stake is involved. Pathological Approach to problem gambling Problem gambling is defined as pathological gambling under APA DSMVI. Pathological gambling is an impulsive control disorder in which there is a chronic and progressive failure to resist impulses to gamble. The concept of addiction of gambling is similar to alcohol and drug addiction in APA model. Gambling is a kind of process addiction. Gamblers enjoy the excitement, tension and anticipation over than the outcome of a gambling event. Gamblers described having the feeling of â€Å"high† similar to that experienced form cocaine in â€Å"outer-body†. There is a dominance in which people have intense preoccupation with gambling to the exclusion of other interests. There is also a problem of tolerance. It means gamblers will eventually spend more money than they intended on gambling, they will lose track of time and control over money betted. In other words, they will gamble from simple to complex high risk and high return betting. We can also see the gamblers have withdrawal symptoms, like irritable, nervous angry and restless. Action gambler Mahjong Tends to be arrogant Desire to control Self-centered, insecure, disregard for authority Easily frustrated, impatient and demanding Highly competitive but given up on the conventional way of competition Attracted to competitive games and those required skills Likely men who started their gambling activities at an earlier state. Gambling gives them a sense of self-enhancement and self-expression Escape gambler Lack of confidence / no self-esteem due to insufficient knowledge and skills Games with no skills involved, e. g. slot machine because no one will judge them Likely to be women who began gambling much later in life than action gamblers Gambling is an emotional reaction to whatever personal or relationship issues they are trying to escape from. Later pathological explanations on problem gambling All pathological gamblers were involved in social gambling for a period of time before they lost control over gambling A significant stressor or greater exposure to gambling often precipitated the sudden onset of pathological gambling. Modern Pathological explanations on problem gambling Modern pathology theories do not argue for determinism but instead rely on the concept of probability- in the sense of â€Å"the relative frequency of occurrence†, â€Å"relative chances of happening†- explain pathological gambling. E. g. Medical Model Medical Model-BlumeAn explanation for deviant behavior that locates its source within the individual and assumes that the behavior is the result of physiological, constitutional, or organic characteristics of the person interacting with the environment. Different psychological and physiological causes of gambling:1. Genetic abnormality that provide a predisposition for disease 1 / 2 2. Mental illness- resulting from obsession or a compulsion3. Abnormal level of dopamine=/=occurrence of sickness It depends on its interaction with other risk factors e. g gender, family influence, ageSolution: Counseling and financial management Weakness: Classical -> Ambiguous judgement.

Write Engaging Geology Personal Statement Research Paper Example

Write Engaging Geology Personal Statement Research Paper Example Write Engaging Geology Personal Statement Paper Write Engaging Geology Personal Statement Paper â€Å"A stone is ingrained with geological and historical memories† (Andy Goldsworthy) We are well-aware of the fact that writing is quite a demanding task but writing an engaging personal statement is utterly complicated. Personal statements are definitely not as simple as typical essays. These particular manuscripts function as a written expression of the candidate that demonstrates to the college his/her qualities, motivation, and passion and career goals. Remember that an engaging statement is one golden ticket that can lead an applicant to the college of his/her choice. Therefore to gain the acceptance of a college and explore the field of geology you need to put together a convincing and winning personal statement. Majority of colleges believe that a statement of purpose – which is another name of personal statement – can further improve the candidate’s admission application. It can improve the application by expressing the qualities and skills of a potential applicant. By analyzing your perfect sentence structure, grammar and punctuation they are supposed to evaluate the applicant and identify how great of a fit the applicant will be for their college. A geology personal statement begins with demonstrating what influenced the candidate to pursue Geology. Why not some other field? Who or what motivated the applicant? By expressing the factors behind the motivation you grab the attention of the roving eyes of the admission officer in the introduction paragraph. For example â€Å"when I was young I went to camping with my family, I was astonished and fascinated by the sheer size of the mountains and ocean. My uncle was a geologist I would go to his home every weekend only to learn more about geology. I was truly captivated by the structure of mountains and the vastness of the ocean.† After expressing the elements that work behind the force that drive you to pursue this field, demonstrate how your academic subjects helped you to understand more about geology. You can tell the audience how particular subjects like Physics and Geography helped you gained in-depth understanding or knowledge of geology. Show the admission officers how you plan to use your analytical skills that you have developed through your education. Also briefly describe the list of projects or field works that you have conducted during studies. In the next paragraph, you need to list down your extra-curricular activities or hobbies while describing each one of them in a brief manner. Majority of students don’t give much attention to these details and they either just list down all their hobbies without describing them or they don’t mention any extra-curricular activities at all. One of the best means through which you can learn how to craft a winning Geology personal statement is through analyzing numerous geology personal statement samples. You can also check out original personal statements that have been written by students and accepted in several colleges. Reading excellent statements will kick start your creativity and help you develop excellent geology statements. Take into account the above given critical pointers and secure a slot in the college of your choice.

Free Essays on The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy: More than just an action packed exciting story; Tolkien had a greater message in his works†¦ J.R.R. Tolkien is demonstrating effective ways for ordinary citizens in our world today to accomplish goals that almost seem impossible. By greatly emphasizing the importance of teamwork, individual strengths, and the will power to overcome setbacks, Tolkien is expressing to his readers what we must do to stand up to terrorism and continue being the leader in world affairs. The Fellowship understands the power of the ring and realize they have to work together as a team to bring the ring back to Mordor to get it destroyed. Since no single person is strong or smart enough to bring the ring back to Mordor on their own, a team is essential. A team is important for this mission because if one member of the team can no longer perform his role, the rest of the team can still go on. For example, the great warrior Boromir was killed, but the Fellowship could still rely on Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli to protect them on their journey. The same concept applies today; the United States cannot destroy terrorism in the world on our own. We have to get other countries to help fight with us. From President Bush’s persuasion, Great Britain sent troops and supplies to Iraq. France is providing money to help reconstruct Afghanistan, and less powerful countries like Morocco, Indonesia, and the Philippines have vowed to choke off terrorist financing. As the United States fights terrorism now, our supporters continue to grow as they see the triumph of good over evil. Each member of the Fellowship has their own individual strength that they contribute to the team in order to make it successful. The Fellowship realizes each others weaknesses and rely on each others strengths to reach a common goal. Frodo was allowed to actually hold the ring because the Fellowship realized that Hobbits are not seeking power and glory ...

Willy from Death of a Salesman, and Hickey from The Iceman Cometh Essay

Willy from Death of a Salesman, and Hickey from The Iceman Cometh - Essay Example Willy becomes entrenched in a quagmire of lies, delusions and self-deception, which ultimately leads him to commit suicide. Theodore Hickman (Hickey), the principal character in Eugene O’Neill’s â€Å"The Iceman Cometh† is a smooth-talking salesman. He comes to Harry Hope’s saloon preaching the gospel of salvation, exhorting his drunken friends to divest themselves of their â€Å"pipe dreams† of tomorrow and make peace with themselves. Hickey’s murder of the tomorrow dreams will bring ruin to the bar, thus Hickey’s advent is the advent of the â€Å"Iceman† or Death. We learn later that Hickey has brought death to his own house, murdering his wife. When he confesses to the murder, Hickey’s gospel of salvation reveals itself as its own pipe dream, a delusion that lets him evade his guilt over his crime. While both characters are salesmen, they differ in temperament and outlook. Willy Loman is an insecure, self-deluded salesman who desperately believes in the American Dream but never achieves it. The fact that he uses gardening as a metaphor for success and failure indicates that he subconsciously acknowledges that his chosen profession is a poor choice, given his natural inclinations (Willy tells Stanley in Act II: â€Å"Nothing’s planted. I don’t have a thing in the ground.†). Here, the garden functions as a substitute for his failed career and his son Biff’s wayward career. Willy Loman is a dreamer, dreaming of a better life as promised by the American Dream. He dreams about being a super salesman like his hero Dave Singleman, a mythic salesman who achieved great fame and popularity. Willy visualizes having people remember and love him, considering it the ultimate satisfaction (Willy tells Howard Wagner in Act II: â€Å"And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want. ‘Cause what could be more satisfying than to be able to go, at the age of

Impact of a water Jet laboratory Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Impact of a water Jet laboratory - Lab Report Example The term molar mass of a given substance is often used to refer to the mass of one mol of a substance (Computer-Based Laboratory, 2007). In mathematical terms, it is often expressed as an average molecular mass of molecules in the given substance when multiplied by Avogadro’s constant often approximated as 6.022Ãâ€"1023. It can be shown molar mass = (1/6.022) Ãâ€"10-23g/u) Ãâ€" (6.022Ãâ€"1023/mol) Ãâ€" average molecular mass (Lide, 2005).This experiment was set up to use the freezing point depression to determine the molecular mass of benzoic acid. This was possible by first determining the freezing point of pure lauric acid and lauric- benzoic mixture, then calculating the molality of solution and the moles of benzoic acid as shown below. In this lab Experiment the apparatus and materials used included Lab Quest , Lab Quest App Temperature Probe, two 18 Ãâ€" 150 mm test tubes 400 mL beaker, ring stand, paper towel or tissue 4 – 1, Lab Quest 4, lauric acid, CH3(CH2)10COOH lauric acid-benzoic acid mixture hot water bath and the utility clamp. In this experiment the procedure was as follow. The initial step involved obtaining and wearing goggles. This was followed by connecting the Temperature Probe to Lab Quest and choosing New from the File menu. For the case where one had an older sensor that does not auto-ID, manually, he/she had to set up the sensor. The next step involved tapping the rate on the Meter screen, then changing the data-collection rate to 1 sample/second and the data-collection length to 600 seconds. This was part one of the experiment in which one had to determine the Freezing Temperature of Pure Lauric Acid. After this part, the next procedure was to add about 300 mL of tap water with a temperature of 20–25 °C to a 400 mL beaker and then placing the beaker on the base of the ring stand. The utility clamp was then used to obtain a test tube containing hot, melted lauric acid from the instructor while making sure
